Split shift

What is a split shift?
A work shift that is divided into two or more non-consecutive segments is called a split shift.

Why are split shifts important?
For some sectors and organisations, split shifts are a necessity. This is particularly true for businesses that operate 24 hours a day and those that close for set periods. Split shifts provide employees with the flexibility to maintain multiple obligations and allow organisations to streamline their operational costs.

How do split shifts impact employees?
Although split shifts may offer employees the chance to work more hours and increase their earning potential, it’s not without challenges. Longer commutes, poor work-life balance, health, and sleep disturbances are just some of the possible negative effects.

Do employers need help finding employees who are willing to work split shifts?
It can be slightly more challenging for organisations to find the right employees who are willing to work split shifts regularly. For industries where split shifts are a reality – such as hospitality – this isn’t such a concern. To attract top talent to these kinds of contracts, employers can offer higher pay rates, flex schedules, or other additional benefits.
