Shift bidding

Shift bidding

What is shift bidding?
Shift bidding is a tool used by roster managers to give employees more agency over the hours they work. Instead of having an open shift policy where the working hours are assigned on a first come first serve basis, shift bidding allows for parameters to be set so that the most suitable candidate who expresses interest can be assigned the shift.

What are the benefits of instituting shift bidding?
Modern businesses are employing shift bidding methods in order to enjoy both operational and workplace culture benefits. In terms of workplace culture, employee morale is higher when workers feel empowered. By allowing workers to bid on shifts, businesses are essentially showing that employees have control over their work schedule. This affords greater flexibility and therefore better productivity levels and higher employee retention levels.

With greater transparency in the scheduling process, employers can adjust to fluctuating work demands and have back up candidates for shifts should the chosen employee need to take PTO or sick leave.

How can a business facilitate shift bidding?
Facilitating shift bidding comes down to having the right rostering software. With Roubler’s online staff rostering software and app, businesses can turn on shift bidding and employees will be notified. This removes the need for manual contact and therefore makes the rostering process more efficient and effective.
