Disciplinary action

What is disciplinary action?
Disciplinary action encompasses measures taken by an organisation when an employee does not meet performance and behavioural expectations. Rather than a form of punishment, disciplinary action is seen as a method of recognition and correction so that all parties are on the same page.

Why might disciplinary action be needed?
Employers may need to take disciplinary action if an employee’s performance has not been up to standard or, if the employee is behaving in ways that are not in accordance with employee relations or the guidelines as set out in the organisation’s policies and procedures.

When these unwanted behaviours such as arriving late or participating in workplace bullying occur, businesses can implement disciplinary actions ranging from verbal and written warnings to a suspension and termination.

How do businesses manage disciplinary action?
When it comes to disciplinary action it’s important that everything is documented accordingly. By making sure that disciplinary incidents and the associated actions are documented, involved parties are clear on the situation and future outcomes if behaviour is not corrected.

With this in mind, documentation processes need to be clear and concise. With Roubler’s electronic document management system, policies pertaining to disciplinary action can be easily accessed to ensure that managers are following processes and any disciplinary action taken can be quickly documented and shared where applicable to ensure HR is kept updated.
