Few industries are feeling the impact of the coronavirus more keenly than food and beverage and retail. From restaurants to retailers, boutiques to major chains, businesses are grappling with the effects of COVID-19 and their employees are already feeling the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when anxieties are running high, panic buying has\nbecome the new norm, and social distancing is a reality that could have a significant\ncommercial effects on businesses of all sizes, how can you maintain calm and\nhelp your team carry on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are four ways you can support each other to get through these uncertain times \u2013 and emerge on the other side of the crisis stronger than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep calm and make a plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If there has ever been a time for fast and effective\ndecision making, it\u2019s now. Your employees are looking to you for direction, but\nif there\u2019s one thing that\u2019s guaranteed to make them feel overwhelmed, it\u2019s a\nknee-jerk reaction from management in response to a poorly thought out plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone is craving a sense of security, and wondering what\nthe next few months will hold. On their longlist are questions like: How do I\navoid catching coronavirus from our customers? Should I be travelling for work this\nweek? What happens if I need to take extended leave? Will I have a job in three\nmonths\u2019 time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have your leadership team prepare a well-considered plan\nthat addresses these kinds of questions \u2013 even if you don\u2019t yet have all the\nanswers. This will give your team some much-needed predictability, and will\nhelp prevent last-minute decisions from having a negative impact on morale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer a human approach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Different people will react to the present situation in\ndifferent ways \u2013 which is why it\u2019s so essential to engage with your employees\nrespectfully, in a way that works for them. Avoid overbearing corporate messaging\nand overcomplicated policies \u2013 communicating on a human level is a must when your\nteam is feeling the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empower managers to have honest conversations with their\nteams about their concerns, and encourage them to communicate any potential impacts\non their day-to-day working life, such as hand-washing procedures or travel\npolicies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, team members with friends and family who fall into\nthe more at-risk categories \u2013 such as the immunocompromised or the elderly \u2013\nmay need extra support in the form of carer\u2019s leave, flexibility with shifts or\nsimply a shoulder to lean on. At times like this a little empathy goes a very long\nway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoid the media hype<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s face it, the media loves nothing more than a good\ncrisis, and the volume on all things coronavirus has been turned up to 100. Plenty\nof the so-called \u201cnews\u201d out there is either misleading or simply fake, which\ncan be confusing at the best of times and downright distressing in the face of\na global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help maintain a sense of perspective, encourage your team to seek out accurate information from credible sources such as the World Health Organisation<\/a>. The Singapore Government<\/a> and Singapore Tourism Board<\/a> websites are other good sources of reliable information, minus the media hype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look forward to the good times<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s human nature that we constantly underestimate ourselves\n\u2013 and research has proven that people have a tendency to overestimate how badly\nthey\u2019ll be affected by negative events, and underestimate how well they\u2019ll cope\nwith and adjust to difficult situations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By engaging with your employees productively and\nrespectfully throughout the coming months, you\u2019ll help your team get through\nthe short-term pressures of coronavirus, and in the process you\u2019ll build a workforce\nthat is loyal and committed to helping your business succeed in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
