The Best Channels for Job Seekers

In today’s competitive job market, research is finding that it’s becoming more and more difficult to get a job—even with the right qualifications.

Candidates in all industries are increasingly experienced, qualified and hardworking. As a result, you need to step up your job search if you want to gain access to the best opportunities and take the next step in your career.

LinkedIn

Despite seeming like a try-hard Facebook for professionals when it was founded, LinkedIn went on to be sold to Microsoft for 26.2 billion US dollars. People are taking up new roles through LinkedIn each and every day, whether it be by profile views, direct offers, job ads and opportunities posted on profiles. Rather than treating it like Facebook and uploading photos of your boozy weekend, make your LinkedIn profile act as your professional hub. It should be engaging, accurate and to the point, and it’s imperative that you check it regularly for new opportunities and to update your information. Be sure to follow anyone you would like to be employed by.

Networking

Shake hands with important people. Attend any industry functions, events and conferences, and eat lunch where you know the influential figures eat. If in conversation, mention your job search as a passing comment—even if it doesn’t feel subtle. Companies often want to fill positions as quickly as possible, and hiring through networks is a common way to circumvent the traditional process.

Seek

Many industries choose Seek as their preferred channel for job advertisements, making it the perfect place to search for opportunities. Prepared resumes and cover letters can easily be uploaded to your profile, making it easy to apply for jobs in just a few clicks. That said, it’s worth personalising your cover letter and resume for each position that you apply for. This doesn’t always have to be a complete change; in fact, it may be as simple as writing the name of the company or recruiter instead of your non-personalised greeting. Remember that employers often receive stacks of applications, so ensure your application will stand out.

Gumtree

Gumtree isn’t just a great website for buying and selling goods: it’s also used to advertise jobs in all sorts of fields, making it a great place to scout as part of your job search. There’s a huge variety of positions advertised, so be sure to check it out—you might be surprised at what you find!

The newspaper

Believe it or not, many companies still advertise job openings in the newspaper. While workforces are becoming increasingly digitised, many still value the traditional approach as an employer. Flick through the paper every day and circle any opportunities; you may even find something that others have overlooked.

Visit company websites and social media pages

If you want a particular job in a specific field, engaging directly with a company’s online presence will keep you in the loop in regard to any developments. You can even set up Google alerts for company news, follow them on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and bookmark the news and updates section of their website. As soon as a position is advertised, you’ll be in the know!

Facebook

Facebook can be appealing in a number of ways, whether it be seeing what your ex is up to or cringing at the status updates from your grandparents. However, believe it or not, it can also be a valuable tool for job hunters.

Search and join Facebook groups relating to your industry—there are always some. From coffee clubs to screenwriters’ guilds to engineering societies – get involved! You may well come across unique opportunities that you wouldn’t have otherwise. University groups are constantly using Facebook to network and share job opportunities; employers sometimes use it themselves to spread the word.

You can also hop on Facebook to look up people you know in the industry to see what they are up to, because you never know who has a job opportunity ready and waiting. If all else fails, post a message in groups asking around for openings—initiative is the key.

Door to door attrition

The classic cold call or door knocking approach is a tried and tested technique that still remains relevant today. Technology has brought us many new ways of job hunting. However, there is still merit in hitting the pavement with a bag full of resumes. A semi-personalised cover letter won’t hurt, either.

Even if you hand over 100 and 90 end up thrown into the recycle bin, that’s still 10 resumes sitting in the hands of a potential employer. They will end up having to DO something about it; it’s physical, it’s taking up space and it may just work.

Job opportunities always vary in nature. But get in the habit of utilising several channels at once rather than relying on a single method. Make it a habit just like getting up in the morning and eating breakfast; it will soon become habit and you’ll have access to numerous opportunities in no time.
