The EA will be open to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reach.gov.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public consultation<\/a> from January 18 to February 15 in order for the MOM to determine if the current salary thresholds and subsequent protections are still appropriate.<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Current Employment Act<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Currently, all employees in Singapore\u00a0are protected by the Employment Act&#8217;s core provisions, introduced in 1968. The core provisions of the Employment Act include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Redress for wrongful dismissal<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Public holiday and sick leave entitlements<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Salary payment and allowable deductions<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, there are a handful of exceptions to these core provisions. It also refers to those who work in manual\u00a0labour\u00a0like cleaners, drivers and constructions workers who earn less than S$4500.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Potential changes to the Employment Act<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11670 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/roubler.com\/hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2018\/02\/employment-act-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"employment act\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/>The public consultation will determine if these core provisions and salary thresholds should undergo changes.\u00a0In particular, the review will be examining\u00a0the group of &#8220;vulnerable workers&#8221;, as well as the executives\u00a0earning over S$4500 monthly.\u00a0The MOM is seeking feedback on whether or not the public thinks those who earn more than S$4500 a month should be allowed cover under the core provisions.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They are also looking for public\u00a0opinion\u00a0on ways to streamline the settlement of\u00a0disputes\u00a0for employees and employers. Currently, the MOM investigates wrongful dismissal disputes, whilst the Employment Claims Tribunal examines\u00a0statutory\u00a0and\u00a0contractual salary-related disputes.
