This year we\u2019ve seen some of the biggest brands in retail and hospitality stung with huge fines and back-pay costs thanks to misinterpretation of awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woolworths, ABC, Bunnings, Michael Hill and\nQantas have become the latest in a very long list of&nbsp;businesses facing payroll\nand&nbsp;remuneration compliance&nbsp;issues \u2013 and this&nbsp;seems to be just the\ntip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many big brands making headlines it\u2019s easy to wonder, what hope do smaller businesses have? The answer could be simpler than you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are so many businesses falling into this trap?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems straightforward enough: make sure your\nstaff are paid correctly and you\u2019ll avoid any trouble. But the truth is, Australia\u2019s\npayroll compliance requirements are the most complicated in the world, which can\nmake understanding payroll a minefield. Even if you think you\u2019re doing the\nright thing, you could still find yourself in dangerous territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a payroll specialist you need to understand\nthe complexities of multiple awards, enterprise agreements, leave\nentitlements,&nbsp;loadings,&nbsp;and payroll tax, often across various states\nand territories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to stay on top of award updates and\nensure they are implemented on time, all while trying to keep abreast of superannuation,\nworker\u2019s compensation and other industrial relations issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s little wonder so many businesses get it\nwrong \u2013 with dire consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do I<\/strong> stay on top something so complex?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Help is out there \u2013 there are a number of associations\nyou can join to ensure you are on top of your compliance requirements. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.payroll.com.au\/\">The Association of Payroll Specialists<\/a> (TAPS)\ncan help you stay up to date with the latest in payroll and they also have a\nhandy helpline for when you run into trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fair Work is another great resource. They can\nhelp you with any payroll concerns, plus their <a href=\"https:\/\/calculate.fairwork.gov.au\/findyouraward\">super\nhelpful pay calculator<\/a> makes it easy to ensure you\u2019re on the\nright track with your award interpretation. You can even sign up to their\nnewsletter and follow them on Linkedin for updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is technology the answer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One bright light at the end of the tunnel is\nthat while the constant changes are happening to awards and legislation, technology\nis advancing right alongside it. Solving the payroll compliance challenge could\nbe as simple as finding the right software, but the trick is to know what you\u2019re\nlooking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re choosing software to automatically\nprocess payroll data and help you navigate these nuances you should always ask:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Will it help me address all the different legislative requirements?<\/li><li>Does it allow for multiple pay categories and leave entitlements?<\/li><li>Does it integrate with the ATO for TFN declarations and STP?<\/li><li>Can it accurately handle enterprise agreements, awards and contractual obligations?<\/li><li>Will it track any updates I might need to apply to my payroll calculations?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re constantly trying to force your\ntechnology to do something it wasn\u2019t really designed for, or creating multiple\nworkarounds just to get your payroll finalised each week, then you are opening\nyourself and your business up to multiple compliance risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The right technology will also ensure you\u2019re not overly reliant on a few key people. Your payroll team might be doing a great job now, but what happens if they leave? Staff turnover could have you scrambling for information and potentially leave you wide open to being yet another underpayment headline.
