Between bites of bagel and sips of skinny cappuccino, our guests shared some of the challenges they&#8217;re facing going into the new year, and gained some insights into what 2020 might hold technology-wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation raised some important questions around the future of award compliance; how businesses can better support their team\u2019s emotional wellbeing; and the ethics of artificial intelligence, which is already transforming the way we do business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the modern award system working?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to some of our guests, no. The modern award system is not in sync with the realities of today\u2019s workforce. Over the past decade, technology has enabled a new flexibility in working arrangements, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roymorgan.com\/findings\/8451-roy-morgan-working-from-home-june-2020-202006290638\">one in three Australians<\/a> regularly working from home. Shift-based employees are feeling the effects, with the average worker clocking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/language\/english\/audio\/are-you-working-overtime-hours-for-nothing-in-australia\">six hours of unpaid labour each week<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award system is yet to catch up with this fundamental\nchange \u2013 and does not take into account the positive impact flexible working\narrangements have on productivity, and the fact that businesses are often the\nones who reap the benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should there be a payroll certification? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury\u2019s out on this one. Navigating the award system is\ntough, even for a seasoned expert. With interpretations varying business to\nbusiness and payroll officer to payroll officer, perhaps it\u2019s time for a formalised\npayroll certification to ensure everyone is on an even playing field when it\ncomes to compliance. After all, this is something the ATO has been exploring\nfor years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue though, isn\u2019t clean-cut. While the benefits could\nbe significant for businesses and employees, the costs involved could easily\nbecome unmanageable, particularly for small businesses with only a handful of\nemployees. It\u2019s a catch-22; the businesses who would potentially benefit the\nmost from a formal certification are also those who are least likely to be able\nto afford it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can we be proactive with mental health?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although most workplaces have the very best of intentions, the truth is that managers can easily become distracted and desensitised when it comes to their team\u2019s emotional wellbeing \u2013 and it shows. According to a recent survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headsup.org.au\/docs\/default-source\/resources\/bl1270-report---tns-the-state-of-mental-health-in-australian-workplaces-hr.pdf?sfvrsn=8\">44% of employees believe their senior leaders do not value mental health<\/a>, and mental illness costs the Australian economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ranzcp.org\/files\/resources\/reports\/ranzcp-serious-mental-illness.aspx\">more than $60 billion a year<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence could provide some of the answers. Face verification technology can be used to alert leaders to trends over time, enabling them to direct their care and attention to where it\u2019s most needed. If done with sensitivity \u2013 and without overstepping the mark when it comes to personal privacy \u2013 the results could be nothing short of profound.
